Blueberry pie and Lucky Strike cigarette mascot costumes I designed and created for CryBaby the musical. Blueberry pie represented the Squares, Cigarette box represented the Drapes.
Structure foam, felt, fabric paint.
All materials used for these costumes were supplied by the school costume shop.
1. I cut two exact circles out of structure foam for the front and back of the pie. I then traced the circle onto blue felt for the front piece and tan felt for the back piece, then sewed the felt onto the structure foam.

2. After sewing the felt down onto the structure foam, I lay strips of tan felt interlaced across the front piece of the pie. After fabric-tacking the strips down, I trimmed the extra fabric from the sides.

3. Once the tan strips had been fabric tacked to the blue felt, I began sewing the ruffles with the tan felt. The ruffles went around the circumference of the front and back piece of the pie to act as the crust. I sewed the ruffles along the edges of the circles. The headpiece was crafted from a burlap head cap, wrapped in the blue felt and sewed down. I created the pie on the plate by hand sewing the structure foam into the shape of the pie slice, and then onto the structure foam plate for extra durability. I tacked the pieces of felt onto the pie slice and added blue buttons onto the side as blueberries.

4. Now that everything was tacked and sewed, I sewed the shoulder straps connecting the front and back pie pieces. Finally, I added velcro to the back of the front and back pieces in order to fasten the costume more securely and ensure it would not create extra movement or reveal the actor's outfit underneath, on stage.

1. Using the same structure foam I used the create the pie, I cut two rectangles for the front and back pieces of the cigarette box, and two pieces that were half the length and width of the front and back pieces. I measured and cut two pieces of white felt, and painted red stripes on the top and bottom of both of them. For the front piece, I traced out three exact circles which fit into each other onto the felt with chalk. Using red, green and black fabric paint I created the circle for the Lucky Strike logo. For the brand name, Lucky Strike, I used iron-on black letters to ensure that the most noticeable area of the costume was precise.

2. Once both the front and the back pieces were finished, I sewed the shoulder straps, made out of structure foam and white felt, to the two main pieces. After that, I sewed the smaller rectangles onto the side to create the box. The actress could slip into the box and wear it comfortably without the hassle of velcro or clasps. I wanted to add a cigarette to make the purpose of the "rebellious" mascot costume more obvious. I rolled structure foam into a cylinder and sewed the edges together. I added tan felt to the bottom the cigarette and wrapped its middle in white felt and topped it with red felt. Finally, I sewed the cigarette to the front piece of the box.
